Local SEO, Google Business Profile and AI answers: how a small business gets found

Local SEO answered plainly: what it costs, how the Google map pack works, why your profile may not show, and how to get your business named in AI answers.

Local SEO is the work that gets your business shown to people searching for your service in your city. SEO means search engine optimization. Locally, it comes down to two things you own. One is your Google Business Profile (GBP), the free listing that puts you on Google Search and Google Maps. The other is your own website.

Google says local results are ordered by relevance, distance and prominence (Google). That is how well you match the search, how close you are, and how well known you are.

Does local SEO actually work for a small business?

Yes, if your customers find you by typing a service and a city. A roofer in Hamilton, a groomer in Vancouver, a courier in Laval. Those searches happen every day, and the phone rings for whoever shows up.

It works less well if you sell nationally, or entirely by referral. In that case a fast website and a phone that gets answered matter more than map position.

Do the math with your own numbers. If your average job is $400 CAD, two extra jobs a month is $800 CAD. Compare that to what a monthly plan costs before you buy one.

How much does local SEO cost per month?

For a single-location business it should be modest, because the monthly work is small and steady. It is profile updates, review replies, a few photos, and a look at what people actually searched.

Price goes up with real scope: several locations, several service areas, or website changes included every month. Price should not go up because the report has more charts in it.

Ask any provider for the task list behind the number. If nobody can name the tasks, the price is not tied to anything. The last question on this page has our number and what is in it.

Is a Google Business Profile free, and do I really need one?

Yes to both. Google lets you add or claim your business at no charge (Google). There is no paid version of the listing itself.

You need one because map results come from profiles, not from websites. No profile means no map pack, no directions, no click to call, and nowhere for reviews to land.

Set it up with your exact business name, one category that matches what you sell, your service area, your hours and your website link. Then verify it.

Google Business Profile or website: which do I need first?

The profile first, because it is free and it can be live in days. It puts your name, hours, phone number and directions in front of people who are already searching.

Your website is what turns that into a call. It is also where Google reads what you do and where you do it. Links to your site feed the prominence part of local results.

If you have neither, claim the profile this week and get the website booked. A profile on its own caps how much you can explain and how much you can sell.

How do I get my business into the Google map pack (the top 3 on Maps)?

Nobody can promise those three spots, and any company that does is guessing. What you can do is feed the three things Google names (Google):

  • Relevance: fill every field, pick the right primary category, list your services.
  • Distance: use a real address or a defined service area, and keep it accurate.
  • Prominence: earn reviews, get listed where your trade gets listed, keep your site linked.

Start with the primary category. It is the field owners most often get wrong, and it decides which searches you are considered for at all.

Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

Usually one of five things. The profile is not verified, it was suspended, or there is a duplicate listing. The category or address may be wrong, or the searcher is too far away.

Check verification first. Google picks the method for you. The options include phone, text, email, video call and a mailed postcard, which takes about 14 days (Google).

If the profile disappeared after an edit, it may be suspended, and there is an appeal process for that (Google). Name and address rules are published too (Google).

Do Google reviews really matter for showing up locally?

Yes. Google names review count and review score as part of prominence, one of the three local factors (Google). Reviews also decide who gets called when three businesses sit side by side.

Do not buy them. Offering anything in exchange for a review is against Google policy and can cost you the reviews or the profile (Google).

Ask at the end of the job, while the customer is happy. Text them your review link the same day, and reply to every review you get.

How long before local SEO shows results?

Longer than a week, shorter than a year, and no honest provider gives you a date. Profile fixes are read quickly because Google reads the profile directly. Website changes wait on Google recrawling your pages.

Judge it on calls, not positions. Results move with the searcher's own location, so your phone is the better meter.

Set a 90-day checkpoint. Write down today's numbers: calls, direction requests, form fills. Compare the same three in three months and decide from there.

How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

You write pages that answer real questions plainly, and you keep your business details identical everywhere. This is what people now call AEO, answer engine optimization: being picked up by AI assistants, not only by search results.

Google is direct about it. There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations (Google).

So the practical version is short. One page per question your customers ask, your name, address and phone written the same way everywhere, and a complete profile.

What does an SEO agency actually do for me every month?

The honest list is short. Keep the Google Business Profile accurate and posted to. Reply to reviews, fix what breaks on the site, and improve one page. Then check what people searched to find you.

That is the work. Everything else is reporting, and reporting is not the work.

Ask for last month's task list before you sign anything. If the answer is a slide deck instead of five lines describing what changed, you are paying for the deck.

What are the red flags when hiring an SEO company?

Five that should stop you:

  • A guaranteed number one position. Nobody controls Google's results.
  • A long lock-in with no way out, especially past 12 months.
  • No named tasks, only a monthly fee and a dashboard.
  • Buying reviews or links for you, which puts your profile at risk.
  • Keeping you off your own accounts. You should own your profile and your analytics.

If two of these show up in the same call, keep looking. This work is not rare enough to accept bad terms for it.

What questions should I ask before hiring an SEO company?

Five, and write the answers down:

  • What exactly will you do in month one, in plain sentences?
  • Who owns the Google Business Profile and the website if we part ways?
  • What am I committed to, and how do I stop?
  • What gets reported, how often, and can I see it myself?
  • What do you not do, so I know what is still on me?

Any provider who answers all five in a short email is worth a call. Vague answers now become vague invoices later.

What does Samro's SEO/AEO Management cost and what is in the weekly report?

Samro Studios runs this as one optional add-on at $79 CAD a month, with no commitment. It covers Google Business Profile management plus a live weekly report in your client portal, checked every Monday.

The report covers three things. It shows where you sit in the Google map pack, plus your website visits and leads. It also shows whether AI assistants name your business when someone asks for your service.

It can be added to any plan. Tell us your business and your city on the contact form and we will look at your profile first.
