This is the real site, live inside this page. The open or closed chip at the top is worked out in Vancouver time as you read it, and the gallery below opens into a lightbox you can swipe or arrow through.

The problem

The salon existed on Google, and nowhere else.

A well-reviewed neighbourhood salon with 124 Google reviews and no website. Everything a new client wanted to know, the prices, the policies, whether anybody is in on a Sunday, lived inside a phone call or halfway down a review thread.

The brief was a first-party home for all of it: fast enough to open on a phone at the dog park, and honest enough that nothing on it needs a call to confirm.

What we built

Worth noticing

The hours widget is a timezone problem in disguise.

Every business site lists its hours. Almost none of them say whether the door is open now, because doing that properly means resolving Vancouver time from wherever the reader happens to be, surviving daylight saving without a table of dates, and rolling to the next opening after close rather than leaving a stale row highlighted. This one uses the browser’s own internationalisation clock, refreshes every sixty seconds, and falls back to the plain hours table if anything goes wrong.

The same honesty runs through the rest of the page. The rating is 4.4 and the star is drawn 40 percent full. The counter says twelve because there are twelve. Any price the owner has not confirmed is flagged rather than published.
